The Bardom Writing Workshops
In The Bardom Writing Workshops, the belief is held that all writers should have certain practices that we exercise. These workshops are geared towards making every writer in attendance a writer that R.E.A.D.S.:
(R)EAD → Writers should read more than they write. Every workshop will have a book to reference.
(E)YES / (E)ARS → Every artist should be able to find and enjoy art in other mediums. Every workshop will include audio or visual aspects.
(A)DVANCE → Artists of any craft should have a desire to advance their skills no matter what level they are at. To help with this, every workshop will have a study of at least one literary device.
(D)ISCUSS → Artists should be open to finding community, expressing and hearing ideas to / from other writers. Every workshop includes a discussion surrounding whatever the topic at hand may be.
(S)HINE → “Everybody wants to shine. Nobody wants to polish.” - G-No, Dallas, TX. Here we polish so we can shine. Every workshop will include editing advice or techniques to practice.

LIL WAYNE, BIG METAPHORS
Because rap is poetry, it is only fair that inspiring poets study one of the most popular poets who has championed one the most popular literary devices. Lil Wayne is not only a self-proclaimed alien and a proven mixtape mangler, he is also a master of metaphor. In the workshop “LIL WAYNE, BIG METAPHORS” we examine the different types of metaphors and test our knowledge using music by Weezy F. Baby. We’ll also have a discussion about changes in our relationships inspired by the novel Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan. Ending with a writing prompt influenced by a combination of both artists (Weezy F. Kennedy?).

X IT OUT
Sometimes we have thoughts in our mind that we have to X out. As we grow, there are often old beliefs that we must X out. Who knows this more than our beloved Malcolm, who X’d out his own birth name? In the workshop “X IT OUT”, we examine The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley. We’ll discuss changes in tone, POV, and juxtaposition while exploring ideas of growth and the ability to change our minds. Music vibes will be surrounding self empowerment.

BAD COMBINATIONS
Everything was going well in Metropolis… until Superman lost Lois Lane. A combination of benevolent power and malignant trauma created a deadly force of misguided heroism. In the workshop “BAD COMBINATIONS” we unpack other mixtures that can impact our stories. We’ll go over ekphrastic poems, synesthesias, and portmanteaus. In place of the regular music vibes, there will be more of a museum vibe with some creative visuals from Post Secrets. Our study guide for this session will come from DC’s Injustice: Gods Among Us.

A HEALTHY HAUNTING
Losing anything changes us. Whether you’ve lost a loved one, a favorite shirt, or faith in a system meant to protect. We never come out the same. In the workshop “A HEALTHY HAUNTING”, we’ll consider methods of honoring what is left and caring for new versions of ourselves. This session uses Tyriek White’s novel, We Are A Haunting, as its study guide. Writing exercises will remix grounding techniques used for calming to help with imagery, manifesting, and reflecting.

BRAG LIVE HOV
“Sometimes I brag like Hov.” And you should too. So let’s find out how by examining the work of Jay-Z. We’ll focus on his infamous use of homophones and double entendres. His own book will be our cheat sheet for this session: Decoded by Shawn Carter. The writing exercise will be addressing any confusion the world might have about who we know we are. Allow us to reintroduce ourselves in the workshop entitled “BRAG LIVE HOV’. You already know the music vibes… #JayZ.
